Calculating the Top Twirler and Top Club Awards

This is a complex process which has been refined to ensure fairness for all clubs regardless of numbers of athletes, but also to encourage full participation while awarding the correct top twirler and top club each time.

The top twirler cup is awarded at Nationals every year, there is one for each division. It is calculated based on the final places of each individual event an athlete competes in weighted against the number of athletes in that division (participant weighting), with further weighting recognised for the level an athlete is in (difficulty weighting). Therefore, the more athletes an athlete wins against, the higher their top twirler score, and the more advanced their level, the higher their top twirler score.

The highest-ranking athlete in each age division is awarded the top twirler cup for that division.  The cup is returned the following year in exchange for a replica cup that they keep.

The placing process for each pair, team, and group (not including composite events) is the same as for individual top twirler.  Each pair, team or group performance is regarded as a single performance for the club regardless of the number of team/group members participating in that event.

To get the ranking for Top Club, the ranking scores for each club’s individual, pair and team/group events are combined.  To prevent bias towards large clubs who enter many athletes/teams/groups and also to prevent bias against clubs that enter athletes with a mix of levels and ages, when calculating the ranking scores, ‘dividers’ are used on the total scores based on Individual events, pair events and team/group events.

For pair and team/group events the divider is the number of performances in the competition by the club.  The total score for each club is calculated and divided by the number of performances the club had in that event to provide the ranking score.

For individual events the average number of individual performances per athlete per club is calculated and is used as the divider of the overall scores from the club in individual events to get the ranking score.

The ranking scores for each club are combined and then ranked with each club being awarded.

Athletes must be full members. Top Club is awarded at every competition.

Full tabulation procedures can be found in the Tabulation section of the Policies and Procedures Manual.
